Can we make a difference?

It seems to me after  25 years working in crime prevention in Indianapolis,  that bad things are happening more and more, many times to good people.  I often follow in the tracks of burglars, thieves, deviants, perps and the like. As divorce, high school drop outs, drug use steadily increase (and of late, unemployment too)...so does crime.  I attempt to keep a positive outlook  but cannot deny that things are trending  and sliding down to the gutter.  They are getting worse rather than better.  Most  people I ask agree. Do you?

Doubt it? Just review the headlines for the past week or so and compare them to what was happening 50 years ago. People are more violent, ruthless, and greedy. Not that bad things didn't happen back then, just they are worse now is my point.

I suppose we can't make a huge difference individually, however we can make difference... with at least one person. One child at a time though various means. Have you heard of the starfish story? It goes something like this, "A man and boy were walking along the sea. The tide had brought to the shore hundreds, if not thousands of star fish. The father picked up one of the starfish and through it back into the ocean. The son asked, 'what difference does that make? There are so many'. The father says 'It made a difference to that one'.

This past week, Guardian Protection Services and 5 employees recently participated in the 12th annual 'Back to School Blast'. This is fun event to kick off the school year and help mainly less privileged urban kids with backpacks, haircuts, food, and other interesting events / services.

Guardian digitally fingerprinted and provided free Bio-docs to over 100 children. We gave away 2 backpacks loaded with school supplies. Fire escape plans, safety tips and crime prevention booklets were provided.

Hopefully, none of these bio docs will ever actually be needed. But if just one child goes missing,  the bio doc can easily be sent to the authorities to aid in a speedy recovery.  It may make a difference to just one little starchild.

We will be at it again soon at the Lawrence Safety Day. Free admission for the entire family offers an exciting and informative schedule of entertaining events on Saturday, August 28th from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM at Fire Station #40, 9530 East 59th Street (corner of 59th Street and Lee Road), located at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Photos of last years safety event

So if you have a child, bring him/her and get a bio doc done.  Help us make a difference and share the word. I hope you are encouraged to do your part and we'll do ours.
